Description:

A SILK ROBE FOR BUDDHIST DANCES
Tibet. 19th. c. Fabric: China, Qianlong period
B. 176 cm, L. 121 cm
Skirt part and sleeves: Silk satin (beige), supplementary pattern wefts from silk (blue, red, pink, yellow, green, white, brown) and gold thread. Inset stripes of silk damask (red, green, turquoise). Top part: beige fabric, without pattern. Lining: silk/cotton (orange-brown, turquoise, beige, dark blue). The robe has a characteristic shape with a wide skirt and triangular sleeves. The high-quality fabric shows woven medallions of five archaic dragons between clouds around a central peach with a bat motif. At the hem a border of larger waves above cloud heads. On the stylized rocks rising from the waves lingzhi mushrooms, daffodils and plums are growing and treasures such as pearls, coral branches and ruyi scepters are floating in between. The elegance of the patterns and the quality of the weaving suggest that the silk was made for a high-ranking person in the Qianlong era. It is possible that this silk was intended for the garment of a Daoist priest. It was later used to make the Buddhist dance robe in Tibet.
From a German private collection, acquired before 2007 - Traces of age and use, slightly faded, minor damages due to age

Robe aus Seide für buddhistische Tänze
Tibet. 19. Jh., Gewebe: China. Qianlong-Periode
B. 176 cm, L. 121 cm
Rockteil und Ärmel: Seidensatin (Beige), eingewebte Muster mit Seide (Blau, Rot, Rosa, Gelb, Grün, Weiß, Braun) und Goldfaden. Eingesetzte Streifen aus Seidendamast (Rot, Grün, Türkis). Oberteil: Beige, ohne Muster. Futter: Seide/Baumwolle (Orange-Braun, Türkis, Beige, Dunkelblau).
Alterssch.
