Description:

A SILK FABRIC PANEL WITH THE EIGHT BUDDHIST TREASURES
China for the Tibetan market, 17th c
132 x 68 cm (149 x 83 cm R.)
Silk satin (orange-yellow) in warp twill weave, lampas, additional brocaded pattern weft: silk (shades of blue, white, shades of green, orange-red, yellow, pink, black, silver-gray), paper strips (with gold leaf), held by additional warp threads in S-twill weave. Both selvedges are preserved.
Sewn onto a frame stretched with canvas. The paired Ashtamangala (fish and knot, lotus and snail horn, canopy and vase, umbrella and vase) alternating in rows, sometimes with different orientations. As each pattern component was individually brocaded, the use of different colors made it possible to create a very varied design. The treasures are also accompanied by elegantly swinging ribbons. Fabrics with this type of pattern were used for hangings and other interior items in Buddhist temples, but also for the robes of monks in China and Tibet.
From the collection of Dr. Herbert J. Exner (1928-2023), collected from the 1960s to the mid-1990s - Slight traces of age, somewhat faded, minor water damages

Seidenstoffbahn mit den acht buddhistischen Kostbarkeiten
China für den tibetischen Markt, 17. Jh.
132 x 68 cm (149 x 83 cm R.)
