Sword "kalis"
Maguindanao, Moro, Philippines, South, 19th century
L. 66,5 cm
Steel, ivory, non-ferrous metal (silver alloy), rattan. This Moro kris (keris, kalis) can be attributed with some probability to the Sultanate of Sulu. The metal is of very high quality and does not have the sometimes coarse refined structures and design features of Mindanao blades, which were often made of locally melted metal. The blade is almost structure-free, although it is made of refined steel (i.e. metal homogenised by "folding"). The blade is densely corrugated (21 waves). A paired pit merges into a central pit after the broad blade base, which is accentuated on both sides by narrow decorative pits. Bracket-like non-ferrous metal applications ("baca-baca") made of a silver alloy run on both sides of the tang at the base of the handle üover the blade shoulder. The decorative filings on the side of the trunkl-like element against the protruding side of the blade base are emphasised by round holes, which were inserted with a metal-cutting tool (metal drill), as they only became common in the second half of the 19th century. The decorative filings (gereneng, "teeth") are completely schematised and only formed by circular arcs and incisions. All surfaces in the area of the blade base are hollow-scraped, including the integrally fitted cross-piece (ganja). The blade groove extends to the tip. The blade fuller is accentuated by swelling. The handle ends in a protruding ivory pommel in the üusual "cockatoo" shape, which is tapped onto the wooden core. Three ferrules made of a silver alloy with a slight copper content (suasa), which the Moro regard as a symbol of "masculine courage" (in contrast to gold, which is considered effeminate and decadent), strengthen it. The ferrules are divided by decorative grooves. The intermediate fields are made grippy by subsequently replaced cord bindings. The base of the blade has a very pronounced jalen (decorative notches with the meaning of an elephant's face as a symbol of strength).

The kalis can be described as the national weapon of the Moro of the sultanates of Sulu and Maguindanao, who resisted the annexation by foreign aggressors for over 450 years, sometimes successfully. The powerful Sulu Sultanate stretched from the islands off Mindanao (Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi) across Palawan and occupied the öeastern part of the Malay state of Sabah (North Borneo). A very high quality weapon that epitomises a high level of armoury craftsmanship.

Schwert "kalis"
Maguindanao, Moro, Philippinen, Süd-, 19. Jh.

Stahl, Elfenbein, Buntmetall (Silberlegierung), Rattan.
