Sword "kalis", "karis"
Philippines South, Moro, Tausug (?), Sulu Archipelago or Mindanao (Maguindanao), 19th century
L. 58,5 cm
A kalis, a Moro-specific derivative of the central Indonesian keris. This very fine example can be attributed with some certainty to the Moro Sultanates of Maguindanao or the Tausug on Mindanao in the 19th century. The blade of this piece features a structure consisting of two opposing twisted rods at the core, around which a cutting edge of refined steel is forged. This technique is of Turkish/Turkmen origin, but continues older traditions. The technique of composite blades composed of several twisted rods probably dates back to workshops during the Eastern Roman Empire. The technique existed in the Balkans until the 19th century and spread to East Asia via Turkic peoples. The blade has a hexagonal to lenticular cross-section and is flawlessly forged - it is a blade of the highest manufacturing quality. The surface is relief-etched; the cutting edge was covered or left out during the etching process. The blade shows only a slight degree of wear, which is evident from the fine hairlines (ornamental grooves) that still remain visually encircling the blade body. The delicacy and quality of the weapon indicate that it is a high-ranking datu (aristocratic) weapon. The blade has seven serrations and the iron-carved elements typical of elaborate keris. The mounting is simple but of high quality. The handle features an intricately braided cord binding for a better grip. The ferrule is made of a silver alloy and features decorative grooves. The small knob, which is attached to the wooden core, is made of ivory and has the shape of a "cockatoo" (jungganan).

Moro is an ethnogenetic term for the resident population, which includes a variety of nominally Muslim groups in the southern Philippines for several centuries. The word originally comes from mauru, the Latin word for the Roman province of Mauritania, and was applied by the Spanish and other Europeans in the aftermath of the Reconquista to the Muslim inhabitants of the southern Philippines ("Moors," Moors, etc.). At least 13 Moro groups can be identified, which exhibit significant linguistic and cultural similarities. All of these groups predominantly call themselves "Moro" in connection with the adoption of Islam. The kalis is used primarily among the Moro of Mindanao, Sulu, Tausug, Samal, and Yakan and is the most prestigious of all Moro weapons
