China, Qianlong period, ca, 1745
B. 27,8 cm
Decorated in the 'Famille Rose' palette, with moulded rim, moulded mask handles with tall feather headdress and an openwork coronet, brightly enamelled and gilt with three herons in the garden of a European castle and a fourth heron in flight, within floral and du Paquier-style borders.
From a North German private collection, acquired before 2007

For a tureen with this pattern, see Christie's London, 22.4.1991, lot 80. For another tureen, see Christie's London, 2. 7.2013, lot 349. For a service with a tureen, see Sotheby's New York, Property from the collections of Lily & Edmond J. Safra, 18.10.2011, lot 705. For a bowl in Washington DC, see Thomas V. Litzenburg, Chinese Export Porcelain in the Reeves Collection at Washington and Lee University, 2006, cat. 39

The exotic bird in the centre of the decoration is probably a copy of the birds that appeared on Meissen porcelain around 1740. Similar birds were also known later on porcelain from Worcester, Chelsea and elsewhere. The view in the background could represent part of the harbour of Batavia, but it is more likely that it is one of the many harbour scenes on Meissen porcelain - Minimal signs of age, very minor wear
