Portrait of Princess Amalie of Saxony, née Princess of Bavaria (1801-1877). The princess is wearing a light blue dress with gold jewellery and belt buckle. Fine gouache painting on ivory, signed G. Nehrlich in gold on the right side. Slightly worn. Decorative wooden frame with burlwood and brass applications, inscribed ‘Princesse Amélie’ and old inventory labels on the reverse, slight age damage and min. rest. Amalie was the daughter of King Maximilan I Joseph of Bavaria and his wife Caroline, née Princess of Baden. She married the future King Johann I of Saxony in 1822.

Gustav Nehrlich studied in Paris under Jean-Baptiste Isabey, among others, and later studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Back in Karlsruhe, he worked primarily for the Grand Dukes of Baden as well as occasionally for the Bavarian King Ludwig I - he produced portrait drawings and miniatures.

Amalie war die Tochter von König Maximilan I Joseph von Bayern und seiner Frau Caroline, geb. Prinzessin von Baden. Sie heiratete 1822 den späteren König Johann I von Sachsen.

Gustav Nehrlich lernte u.a. in Paris bei Jean-Baptiste Isabey, später studierte er an der Kunstakademie in München. Zurück in Karlsruhe arbeitete er vor allem für die badischen Großherzöge sowie auch gelegentlich für den bayerischen König Ludwig I - er fertigte Portraitzeichnungen und Miniaturen.
