This exceptional 190 SL is far more than just a classic car; it's a genuine time capsule that tells a unique and fascinating story. Instead of undergoing a conventional restoration, this 190 SL spent decades in a long slumber, preserving its authenticity and wearing the passage of time with unparalleled dignity. It's a living piece of automotive history, whose patina doesn't just tell a story-it makes it feel real.
The history of this 1959 model began uneventfully: in 1968, with a mileage of just 51,000 km, the vehicle was de-registered in Switzerland. The owner, who was planning a two-year trip to the USA, meticulously prepared his beloved roadster for its long period of storage. Chrome parts were carefully removed and wrapped in old newspaper. The underbody received a protective layer of preservative before the car was jacked up and safely put away. However, the planned two years turned into seven, then ten, and ultimately the 190 SL spent over four decades in its protected hiding spot.
Its remarkable, unrestored condition is a direct result of this careful preparation and long-term storage. The majority of the body still wears its original factory paint, which is an absolute rarity. Only the rear decklid was repainted due to minor scratches during its upkeep-a minimal change that in no way detracts from the car's authenticity. This remarkable originality was officially recognized in 2019, when the vehicle received the prestigious award for the Best Unrestored Car at the Concours d’Elegance on Lake Tegernsee. As a visible testament to its history, even the original cross-ply tires and the old newspapers in which the chrome parts were wrapped are still present.
Technically, the 190 SL also presents itself as a true survivor. Only minor, reversible changes were made to optimize its reliability for modern use. The original fuel pump was replaced with an electric version to improve starting after long periods of inactivity, though the original pump has been carefully stored and can be reinstalled at any time. The soft top was also replaced for purely practical reasons. A genuine hardtop in the car's color-very rare for this model-is also included in the sale.
The low mileage of approximately 61,299 km is fully verifiable given the vehicle's unique history. The authenticity of its components has been comprehensively confirmed by experts from the Daimler-Benz Group and members of the 190 SL Club, which further underscores the seriousness and value of this classic. With a valid TÜV inspection report until July 2027 showing no defects, the car is ready to hit the road again.
