MAITREYA 'THE KIND ONE'
Tibet, 16th c.
H. 18,5 cm
"Maitreya (byams pa), the embodiment of all-embracing goodness, is regarded as the Buddha of a coming auspicious age, who is revered as a sign of hope, especially in dark times. Thus Maitreya, like Buddha, is understood as a teacher, which is also indicated by his teaching gesture (dharmacakramudra). Maitreya's appearance was once prophesied by Buddha Shakyamuni. Maitreya sits on a moon lotus cushion. His sitting posture as a bodhisattva is the diamond seat, with the legs crossed and the soles of the feet pointing upwards. His jewellery, in its variety, contains a deeper symbolism. The five points of the crown, for example, point to the five thatagatas and their five wisdoms, which help to overcome the five main obstacles. It is the wisdom of the Buddhas that appears in the four cosmic directions and the centre in the mandala. That the jewellery consists of six different parts points to the six paramitas - the six virtues: Rings on arms and legs - devotion, belt - morality, ear jewellery - patience, necklace - strength, crown - immersion, brahma string - insight. In each of his two hands he holds a lotus stem, on the blossoms of which the branch of a coral can be seen on the right and a bottle of water on the left. Another attribute and distinctive feature is the stupa on the top of his upwardly coiled headdress. At the bottom of his double lotus base, there is an inscription in Tibetan characters. Since most artists are ignorant of writing and copy their written instructions incorrectly, this inscription is only incompletely legible: rje btsun byams pa la na mo / dag bya ma'i pha mabanyisa skyi tshe byas pa'i / 'grob ... /dga' ldan rnas su kye bar shog / yon chod bkra shis (?). At the beginning it says: "Glory to Jetsün Jampa (Maitreya)"; at the very end it says something like: "The offering is cut off from happiness ", or also the name Yonchö Tashi (possibly the patron). Bronze, base originally sealed, sealed with the double vajra.
Old German private collection, collected between 1960 and 1995 - Minor wear
