Liu Guosong (Liu Kuo-Sung), born 1932, also known as the founder of the "Fifth Moon Group", came to prominence in Taiwan in the 1950s. In 1968, he was inspired by astronaut William Anders' photograph Earthrise, taken on the Apollo 8 Mission and hence began to develop his "Space Series". He starts to depict the sun and the moon shining above the earth with broad, abstract brushstrokes representing the landmasses and oceans of the earth, clearly showing his influence from Western painting concepts. Never the less, his minimalist compositions still express a poetic sentiment, rooted in his Eastern origin. In 2016, he was the first Chines painter to be elected honorary member of the American Academy of Arts & Science and is acclaimed "the Father of Contemporary Ink Painting". His works are widely collected by Museums worldwide, including the Palace Museum, Beijing, the British Museum, the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, the National Gallery in Singapore etc.
