The 1964 Jaguar E-Type isn't just a sports car; it's a moving work of art that embodies the golden era of British automotive design. Widely considered an icon of automotive history, it's a car that nearly everyone recognizes. The first series, which debuted in 1961, is seen by enthusiasts as the "purest" and most sought-after version, with a timeless design by Malcolm Sayer that allegedly prompted Enzo Ferrari to call it "the most beautiful car in the world."
According to production statistics, a total of 15,493 examples of the Series 1 Jaguar E-Type with the 3.8-liter engine were produced between 1961 and 1964. The majority of these-nearly 9,000-were exported to the United States, with only 2,307 remaining in the home market. What makes the car in this report particularly special is that only 523 of these models were originally sold in Germany, making it a true rarity there.
This classic is powered by the legendary 3.8-liter inline-six engine, first used in the famous XK 150 S. With 238 horsepower and a 4-speed MOSS manual transmission, it promises an authentic and unforgettable driving experience. Its advanced independent suspension and disc brakes on all four wheels were far ahead of their time, providing dynamic and safe handling that allowed for a top speed of nearly 240 km/h.
The authenticity of this roadster is confirmed by the accompanying Jaguar Heritage Certificate dated November 29, 2017. It proves that the vehicle was originally sold as an "E-Type 1 3.8 l Open Two Seater Left Hand Drive" (OTS, LHD) to the still-existing dealer Emil Frey in Zurich.
What makes this E-Type truly unique is the story behind its multi-year, full restoration that began in 2017. It was driven by a deeply emotional goal: the client wanted to surprise his father, the car's first owner. The father hadn't seen the car in decades and was to experience his E-Type as if it were brand new again, just as it rolled off the assembly line at the famous Browns Lane factory in Coventry in the spring of 1964.
Under the motto "money is no object," renowned restorer Denis Zarmstorf of Historacing was commissioned for the project. The entire process was overseen by an external appraiser who initially admitted to being skeptical that the goal of achieving a perfect "condition 1" would be possible.
An initial assessment in November 2013, when the car was found, gave the E-Type a grade of 4+ and a market value of €36,000. The report from that time noted:
"The exterior body is in satisfactory condition, the chrome parts can be reconditioned, there is hardly any corrosion, no welding found… Bodywork was repaired in two places with filler… Chrome and trim parts are complete except for a few screws and in sufficient condition… The windshield is in good condition, the plastic rear window in the soft top is deficient, the soft top itself is also in deficient condition with open chafing spots, a tonneau cover is present… the dashboard is weathered and shows cracking, overall a sufficient condition… The underbody shows rust, but no repairs, welding or similar, overall sufficient. The engine is complete but defective and could not be started… there is a timing chain problem, overall a deficient condition. The clutch could be operated, the gearbox could be shifted while stationary. The chassis and brake system could only be visually assessed as complete and satisfactory…"
The passion of everyone involved, including the client who saw himself as part of the restoration team, led to a meticulous and uncompromising process. Only when professionally unavoidable were specialized tasks, such as painting or shock absorber reconditioning, outsourced to highly qualified specialists.
The expert report on the car's features lists the following:
Steel monocoque, bolted tubular front frame / blac
