Old German private collection, assembled by repute in the 1970s

Leng Mei, style name Jichen, was a court painter in the Kangxi period (1662-1722) of the Qing dynasty. He was the most successful student of Jiao Bingzhen (active ca. 1680-1720) and painted mostly figures in garden scenes. He did also portraits and flower paintings with strangely depicted garden rocks. The flat rock in this painting reminds one of these but lacks a certain kind of perspective which Leng Mei used under the influence of Western painting techniques at court - Traces of age, minor rest.
