Description:

Badik dagger knife "badee", "bade-bade"
Indonesia, North Java, possibly Southeast Sumatra, 18th/19th century
L. 24,5 cm
A fine example of a Javanese badik in perfect condition. The blade is knife-shaped with a drop-point shape (the tip or spine is slightly drawn downward) and a flat, rectangular cross-section with a beveled, wedge-shaped edge. The streaked grain is due to the blade body being forged from solid, high-density, vertical layers (pamor miring), to which a cutting edge of fine steel was forged. The handle is made of exquisitely grained kèmuning wood (Murraya paniculata), which is arguably the most popular weapon handle wood in Javanese and South to Central Sumatra. The nginden ("3D") grain is particularly pronounced. The pistol-like, bent shape of the handle is typically West Javanese and is found in a similar form on blade objects from South Sumatra, although here it usually features somewhat more flowing lines (a curved handle nape). The elegantly projecting tapa-kuda ("horse's hoof") end of the handle is a basic Malay design found throughout the archipelago. In folklore, this shape is now associated with the speed and strength of the horse, although this is likely a more recent interpretation. The scabbard is made of one-piece ebony and features ivory end caps at the mouth and foot in a typical West Javanese-South Sumatran style. The craftsmanship of the assembly, which can be described as a unified ensemble, is outstanding. The degree of preservation and uniformity of the assembly, as well as the flawless quality of the blade, make this a particularly attractive piece. The scabbard design is typically Northwest Javanese and Malay; it is also found in the Banjar region (South Borneo).

As Bugis influence established itself, Badik people apparently gained a foothold in the 17th century, particularly on the northern coast of West Java and in South Sumatra. This development can be seen in the context of the VOC conquest of Makassar in the late 17th century and the subsequent Bugis diaspora. There is evidence of the existence of Badik for centuries, especially in southern and central Sumatra

Dolchmesser Badik, "badee", "bade-bade"
Indonesien, Nord-Java, evtl. Südost-Sumatra, 18./19. Jh.
L. 24,5 cm
