AN IMPORTANT ORMOLU MOUNTED WHITE CARRARA MARBLE LOUIS XV PENDULE Royal Clockmaker Jean-Antoine Lepine, Paris, circa 1780 45 x 42 x 14 cm On a naturalized Carrara marble base, a fully plastic representation of Cupid and Psyche made of fire-gilded bronze, filigree base relief and disc feet. Bulged, white enamel dial with Arabic numerals and fine, ornate hands. Signed "Lepine" and "H.Ger Du Roi" in red. Large Parisian movement with a running time of 8 days, half hour striking on bell and thread suspension. Pendulum lacking. Marble partially chipped and minor losses to edges of base. Rest., dial with minute dam., runnding not checked. French private collection. Jean-Antoine Lépine's creations were well respected and in demand. Lepine was not just an outstanding watchmaker of his time,but also a great inventor and innovator, who opened a number of inventions to the world, such as flat pocket watches, watch cases with a "lost hinge". He contributed inventions which are still used in watchmaking today and was amongst the finest French watchmakers, who were contemporary world leaders in the field. The first watchmaker who used Arabic numerals on the clock face. The aiguilles à pomme apple shaped hands; hollow, tip hands, were first used by Lépine. He was the teacher of Breguet. In 1765 or 1766 (precise date not known), he was appointed Horloger du Roi (Clockmaker to the King). His clients were many aristocratic and bourgeois families of Europe.In particular, the Comtesse d'Artois and de Provence, the British, Spanish and Swedish royal families, the great philosopher Walter,George Washington and many other great people of that time. Several of Lepine clocks and watches are on display in European museums and palaces, his timepieces are among the finest in the history of watchmaking and are genuine masterpieces of a bygone era.
