Description:

AN IMPORTANT LATE GOTHIC GROUP OF THE BAPTISM OF CHRIST Saxon Master, 1500 circa H. 91/101 cm St. John baptizes Christ. Linden, carved with hollowed backs. The Christ carved from one piece. Remnants of the original polychromy in "Wruggeltechnik" (tremolated surface). Flesh colours overpainted. Slight age damage and minor restorations. St. John with partially original polychromy in "Wruggeltechnik" (tremolated surface), largely overpainted. Flesh clolours overpainted. Upper hand with calyx has been restored, fingers partly missing. Traces and some damages due to age in general. Numbered "P17a" and "P17b" in black on the reverse. Property of a Thuringian noble family, formerly inventory of Poschwitz Castle. The group is visible on an old photography (probably from the 1930ies) of the library room. The excellently carved figures of John and Christ show strong influences from the important Franconian workshops from Nuremberg, Würzburg and Bamberg. The influence of the workshops was strongly felt in Thuringia, Saxony and the Anhaltinian area. Lorenz von Bibra for expl. commissioned the Riemenschneider workshop with the altar for the church of St. Leo in Bibra (south of Thuringia). The figures of the baptismal group with their slender limbs and pointed faces with pronounced chins indicate that they originated in Central Germany, probably in the Saxon region. The virtuoso and individually designed robes with a fluttering sheet on the figure of Christ and the tied fur robe of the Baptist suggest a master of his trade. An exact assignment to a specific workshop cannot be made. However, with their slender physionomy, the figures bear strong resemblance to a man of Sorrows from the Laurentius Church in Pegau (today SKD, sculpture collection) as well as to a Christ resting by the Zwickau carver Peter Breuer (SKD ZV 3997) as well as to the slender-legged figures of St. John and St. Christopher by the same master (SKD, SAV2273a2 and a1). Lit. Silke Tofahrn, Gotische Skulptur in Sachsen, Schloßbergmuseum Chemnitz, Nr. 37, 46, 47.
