Eugen Müller, a native of Heidenheim, was a resident of China for business reasons between 1910 and 1934. During his travels through Tibet, Manchuria, Mongolia and other provinces of China, he acquired numerous art objects that say a lot about his attachment to Chinese culture. During a stopover in Germany, he met his future wife Marta Kaiser, a merchant's daughter from Nürtingen. The couple, who had adopted the double name Müller-Kaiser, lived in Beijing, Tientsin and Shanghai before deciding to leave China and return to Germany in 1934. Packed in two large wooden crates, their household goods and art collection arrived in Nürtingen. In Germany, Eugen Müller-Kaiser was active until his death in 1962 as a co-partner in the company Georg Kaiser KG together with his brother-in-law Viktor Kaiser. His wife, who also worked for the company, died in 1980 in Nürtingen - A very similar censer with a four-character Xuande seal mark from the Gustav Detring (1842-1913) and Constantin von Hanneken (1854-1925) collection, assembled in China prior 1900, was sold at Sotheby’s London, 7.11.2018, lot 80 - Minor traces of use
