pioneering design
The Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato GT is a distinctive and very rare sports coupé, produced from 1969 to 1975 in collaboration with the coachbuilder Zagato. The unique wedge-shaped design by Ercole Spada, who passed away on August 3rd of this year at the age of 88, was far ahead of its time. It features smooth surfaces, a large glass tailgate, and a transparent plastic cover over the front headlights.
In 1960, a 23-year-old Ercole Spada began his work for Zagato, which would last until 1969. After just a few months, he became the chief designer of the traditional Milanese coachbuilder and designed numerous sports cars that are now considered classics. Spada is widely regarded as Zagato's most important designer, responsible for the company's most creative and successful period. His creations include the Alfa Romeo 2600 SZ, the Lancia Fulvia Sport, and the Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato itself, about which he had commented with a big grin on his face in an interview earlier this year: "I really liked that one - even though many people didn't react so kindly when it came out."
The car is based on a shortened Giulia platform and shares many components with the Alfa Romeo GT 1300 Junior and the Spider. It was built in two main series: the GT 1300 Junior Zagato (1969-1972), powered by a 1.3-liter twin-cam inline-four with approximately 88 hp, and the GT 1600 Junior Zagato (1972-1975), which had a more powerful 1.6-liter engine with around 108 hp. A total of no more than 1,510 units were produced (1,108 of the 1300 and 402 of the 1600), making the car an extremely sought-after classic today.
The Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato GT described here, number 784, registered on May 11, 1971, is a particularly rare example, essentially a one-of-a-kind. This is because the first owner, an Alfa Romeo dealer from Euskirchen, had already modified the engine from the original 1300 unit to the more powerful 1.6-liter engine in 1972.
The vehicle has a German "H-Kennzeichen" (historic license plate) and a new TÜV (technical inspection) from August. It comes with a ClassicData valuation from 2008 (Grade 2+, value at the time: €32,000). Furthermore, the car is equipped with Campanatura 38-Cromodora alloy wheels and was extensively "refined" in the 1980s. It was given various custom-made polished aluminum trim parts, a rare aluminum fuel cap from an Aston Martin Zagato, and a lighter rear aluminum bumper that others do not have.
Visually, the dominant color is turquoise, which is often used as an accent color to give outfits, interiors, etc., a fresh and lively touch. This works well here, as everything from the seats to the dashboard, door panels, and center console, as well as the sporty three-spoke steering wheel, is kept in turquoise.
In summary, the Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato GT is particularly captivating due to its unique and pioneering design, which is evident, for example, in the oval dashboard, whose design echoes the styling of the front. The equipment was quite common for a sports car of this class at the time, but the focus was clearly on aesthetics and driving characteristics. As is typical for Alfa Romeo engines of this era, the engine is very rev-happy and delivers its power in the upper rev range, which invites a dynamic and sporty driving style. The acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in around 9 seconds was remarkable for the time.
