Wood with brown-red patination. The caryatid stools have a long tradition among the Luba and Hemba. They are usually female figures who support the round seat in a standing or sitting position. This, however, is a rarer variant with a male figure.
Former important South German private collection, acquired at Nagel, Stuttgart, sale 35T, 7 November 2000, lot 617, from the collection of Prof. Ferdinand Herrmann (1904-1974), curator of the ethnological collection of the von Portheim Foundation Heidelberg until 1969, honorary professor of ethnology at the University of Heidelberg in 1971 - cracks in the area of the base

Holz mit braun-roter Patinierung. Die Karyatiden-Hocker haben eine lange Tradition bei den Luba und Hemba. Zumeist handelt es sich um weibliche Figuren, die in stehender oder sitzender Haltung die runde Sitzfläche stützen. Hier handelt es sich dagegen um eine seltenere Variante mit einer männlichen Figur.
Ehemals aus einer bedeutenden süddeutschen Privatsammlung, erworben bei Nagel, Stuttgart, Auktion 35T, 7. November 2000, Lot 617, aus der Sammlung von Prof. Ferdinand Herrmann (1904-1974), bis 1969 Kurator der völkerkundlichen Sammlung der von-Portheim-Stiftung Heidelberg, 1971 Honorarprofessor der Ethnologie an der Universität Heidelberg - Risse im Bereich der Standfläche
