A LARGE WOODEN BOOK COVER WITH REMNANTS OF GILDING
Tibet, 15th c.
72 x 28 x 4 cm
The rectangular cover carved in deep relief with a central cartouche showing Manjuvajra in the centre seated in vajrasana on a lotus base placed on an elaborate throne, his principle hands resting in dhyanamudra on his lap while both secondary ones holding vajra and manuscript, flanked to each side by Buddha Shakyamuni seated on an elaborate throne, each with the right hand in bhumisparshamudra, all surrounded by different minute carved divinities encompassed by scrolling tendrils, set within a double petal border, the reverse deprived of any decoration and one side showing the letter ‘ka’, traces of gilding.

Großer Buchdeckel aus Holz mit Resten von Vergoldung

Der rechteckige Deckel ist in tiefem Relief geschnitzt mit einer zentralen Kartusche, die Manjuvajra in der Mitte zeigt, wie er in Vajrasana auf einem Lotussockel auf einem kunstvollen Thron sitzt, seine Haupthände ruhen in Dhyanamudra auf seinem Schoß, während die beiden zweiten Hände Vajra und Manuskript halten, flankiert von Buddha Shakyamuni, der auf einem kunstvollen Thron sitzt, jeder mit der rechten Hand in bhumisparshamudra, alle umgeben von verschiedenen winzigen geschnitzten Gottheiten, die von Ranken umgeben sind, eingefasst in eine doppelte Blütenblattbordüre, die Rückseite ohne jegliche Verzierung und eine Seite mit dem Buchstaben „ka“, Spuren von Vergoldung.
