A Large and Museal Chalice in the Shape of a rummer with Portraits of Saxon Personalities

Silver, chased, engraved and partially gilded. Flared stand, cylindrical shaft and spherical cup. On the stand four inlaid medals, surrounded by chased vine tendrils and laurel wreaths. On the cupa hanging fruit bunches under winged angel heads. Smooth lip rim. On the shaft four oval medallions in relief depicting the 4 Evangelists. On the stand four medallions showing religious themes related to the history of Saxony, such as the Saxon Elector and Martin Luther next to a cross and the date 1617. The medallions on the cupola, chased in high relief, show a bust of Jesus Christ and various portrait busts of Councillors or court preachers from the period, among others Martin Geier, Johannes Oleanus, Adam Scherzer, Valerius Alberti and Michael Chr. Ludovikus. Medal set in the base with the portrait of Martin Luther and the city of Wittenberg, which is covered on the underside by a coin with a hinged mechanism, probably inserted later. This shows Pope Innocent XI. Marks: City mark "L" . Year letter "V", master's mark "BL" for Balthasar Lauch (master in 1670). Ca. 723g. Slightly dented, min. rest.
From an old southern German private collection, supplemented by inheritance in the 1950s and acquisitions in the 1960s to the 1980s.
