The frontal image is in style and composition reminiscent of three and fivepeaked brush rests from in various materials. This elegant piece exemplifies the aesthetic taste of scholar-officials of the Ming and Qing dynasties, who sought objects for their studio that had a variety of functions, such as brushrests and paperweights, as well as being works of art. A slightly larger carving of this theme, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in The Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum. Jade, vol. 9, Qing Dynasty, Beijing, 2011, pl.64, together with one modelled as three peaks with chilong, pl. 66. A five-peaked ivory example is illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Bamboo, Wood, Ivory and Rhinoceros Horn Carvings, Hong Kong, 2002, p. 114, catalogue No. 104 - Few tiny chips to extremities

China, Qing.Dynastie, ca, 18th c.
L. 17,1 cm

The Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum abgebildet. Jade, Bd. 9, Qing-Dynastie, Peking, 2011, Abb. 64, zusammen mit einer Schnitzerei in Form von drei Gipfeln mit Chilong, Abb. 66. Ein fünfspitziges Elfenbein ist in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum abgebildet: Bamboo, Wood, Ivory and Rhinoceros Horn Carvings, Hong Kong, 2002, S. 114, Katalog Nr. 104 - Wenige winzige Chips
