A BRONZE FIGURE OF A SEATED OFFICIAL
China, 17th/18th c.
H. 25 cm
Seated in European fashion on a throne with both shoed feet firmly placed on its base, both hands raised in front of his chest holding a tablet, wearing various garments including underskirt and a wide sleeved mantle covering both shoulders falling down his body and legs, his face displaying a severe expression with slit eyes below arched eyebrows, moustache framing his lips and his head covered with the specific bonnet decorated with a pair of ribbons falling down on his shoulders, traces of gilt-lacquer.
From the collection of the merchant Alfred Julius Forkel (1873-1934), acquired in China before 1910, described in the collector's diary, written between 1901 and 1910, on page 74, no. 16

In europäischer Manier auf einem Thron sitzend, mit beiden Füßen fest auf dem Sockel stehend, beide Hände vor der Brust erhoben, eine Tafel haltend, verschiedene Gewänder tragend, darunter einen Unterrock und einen weitärmeligen Mantel, der beide Schultern bedeckt und über seinen Körper und seine Beine herabfällt, sein Gesicht mit strengem Ausdruck, mit geschlitzten Augen unter gewölbten Augenbrauen, Schnurrbart, der seine Lippen umrahmt, und sein Kopf bedeckt mit der spezifischen Haube, die mit einem Paar Bändern verziert ist und über seine Schultern herabfällt, Spuren von Goldlack.
